A no deposit bonus is free money in the sense that you did not pay for it. It is not free money in the sense that you can take it out. Between those two facts sits an arithmetic problem most players never work through, and the answer is smaller than the headline every time.
The five numbers that decide everything
Every offer, however it is dressed up, reduces to five figures. The bonus amount. The wagering multiplier. What that multiplier applies to. The maximum cashout. And the expiry.
The third one is where offers diverge most. Thirty times a 20 dollar bonus is 600 dollars of turnover. Thirty times deposit plus bonus, on an offer that required no deposit, is usually still bonus only, but the same phrasing on a deposit offer doubles the requirement. Read which it is.
Working a typical offer all the way through
Take 20 dollars, 40x wagering on the bonus, 100 dollar maximum cashout, slots at 96 percent return.
Turnover required is 20 times 40, so 800 dollars. At a 4 percent house edge, expected loss across that turnover is 32 dollars. You started with 20. Expected value before the cashout cap is already negative.

The pattern is clean. Around 25x on a 96 percent game, expected loss equals the bonus. Above that the offer is mathematically a losing proposition before the cashout cap is even applied.
So why claim them at all
Because your downside is zero. Expected value is the average across many attempts, and you are not playing the average, you are playing one attempt with nothing at stake. Most attempts end at zero. A few end at the cashout cap. You cannot lose money you never deposited.
The mistake is not claiming these offers. It is believing the headline number, depositing afterwards because the site now feels familiar, and treating a 50x offer as equivalent to a 20x one. Comparing published no deposit bonus codes on wagering and cashout rather than on the advertised amount is the whole skill.
The quick filter
Wagering at 25x or below is worth real attention. Between 25x and 40x, claim it and expect nothing. Above 40x with a low cashout cap, it is a mailing list signup with a game attached. A 50 dollar bonus at 50x is worth less than a 10 dollar bonus at 20x, and the bigger number is the one advertised.
